Drug Abuse

Written by: Joy Omoijate

What are drugs?

Drugs are illegal substances that some people smoke, inject e.t.c for the physical and mental effects it has. It is also a substance used as medicine or used in a medicine.

What is alcohol?

Alcohol are drinks such as beer, wine e.t.c. that can make people drunk. The clear liquid that is found in drinks such as beer, wine e.t.c and is used in medicines, cleaning products e.t.c.

Why do young people take drugs and alcohol?

Some of the young people will try something sometimes, but what is the thing that ultimately hooks them?

Unfortunately illicit drugs have two basic qualities that are terribly appealing.

One, drugs make them feel good. Their bodies, minds, friendships and spiritual lives are changing so rapidly they are often bored, confused, lonely or just unhappy. For those who don't cope well with all the pressures, the substance dulls their pain. Young people today have been raised in the most drug oriented society in history. Young people are living in emotional pain and they want relief, but instead of finding real relief, they become addicted.

MAJOR REASONS WHY YOUNG PEOPLE ABUSE DRUGS AND ALCOHOL?

1.Peer pressure:- The strongest motivator for a young person is the desire for acceptance by peers. The odds are great, that when young peoples friends are experimenting with drugs or alcohol, then they might also experiment as well.

2. Parental Behaviors:- many young people observe their parents drinking. Despite dangerous consequences, it is common for parents to provide liquor for teenage parties. Parents justify their actions by saying "it is much better to allow our kids to drink at home and provide just beer for their parties, we also supervise them". The more young people experiment with drinking and drugs, the more likely they are to become abusers, because they learn to use chemicals to cope with natural development. They feel anxiety and they use drugs to sedate that anxiety. Such young people stop learning how to handle stress.

3. Depression:- young people who are angry or depressed are prone to drug abuse. When a young person is bored or depressed over a long period of time, they will tend to look for stimulation. If there are low levels of imagination or a lack of creativity, then these young people are likely to turn to drugs.

4. Parental Lifestyle:- Too many parents are intent on being buddies with their children and do not take the responsibility of parenting seriously enough. Parents today must take time to invest in quality and quantity time to create a loving, firm and caring environment for young people.

Types of drugs young people engage in or take

1) Alcohol: Alcohol is a dangerous drug, though our society mistakenly tends to view it separate from other drugs. Alcohol is a drug and a depressant and it causes more deaths among young people than any other drug. Alcohol use is also associated with homicides, suicides and drowning.

2) Marijuana: Marijuana smoking usually becomes the springboard to heavier drug use. Many generally believed this to be true and at the time, no substantial studies proved the contrary. All that has changed however, for one thing, today's Marijuana is upto 20 times stronger than the plants harvested only a decade ago. Furthermore, it has been substantiated that not only does it have more cancer causing agents than tobacco, but it also destroys brain cells and harms short term  memory retention. Marijuana also diminishes the body's ability to protect  itself  against illness by reducing a division of disease repelling white blood cells.

Young people, let me implore you to keep free from drugs of any kind. Drugs are for losers. Remember the motto "Be smart, Don't start", just say No," and "Drug free, by choice.".

To be continued Next week.  Remember to grab a pack of pizza with a bottle of wine and enjoy a smooth ride with us. Cheers🥂

  1. Alcohol and illicit drugs have possed great danger on some Nigerians. Government's plan to embark on testing youths and adults to discover those who are involved, if properly done, will reduce the problems associated with drugs and substance abuse.
